Learning
At our school, we teach the NSW curriculum and offer many different subjects to support each student’s learning. We know that development of skills in literacy and numeracy are the building blocks for learning and for everyday life. Our teachers use effective teaching strategies to help students achieve their goals.
Why choose us for your child’s learning?

Extension opportunities
Some students are ready for more challenges. We offer open-ended tasks, enrichment programs and support. We help all students to reach their full potential.
What students learn
Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.
At Hallidays Point Public School, students can choose to attend Special Religious Education (SRE) or Special Education in Ethics (SEE) classes, depending on which options are available from approved providers each year.
When you enrol your child, you’ll be able to pick from the approved SRE or SEE choices offered here or to opt out altogether. Students who don’t take part in these classes will join supervised, independent alternative activities.
If you want to change your child’s option at any time, just let us know by emailing the school.

At Hallidays Point Public School, we are committed to supporting and challenging students with high potential and gifted abilities across a range of areas. Our dedicated staff work hard to provide enriching opportunities that help every student grow and succeed.
In the Intellectual Domain, students can participate in programs like the ICAS assessments, the Newcastle Permanent Mathematics Competition, and extension groups. We also run the "Tell Me a Story" writing and illustration competition and a Whole School Public Speaking Competition to develop critical thinking and communication skills.
Creativity is encouraged through events such as our Science Fair, Debating teams and Choir, where students can explore and showcase their talents. In addition, our sports teams and external providers offering a range of sports such as golf, ultimate frisbee and pickleball promote physical wellbeing, teamwork and a balanced approach to learning.
We identify gifted and talented learners early, recognising those who excel in areas like creativity, leadership, problem-solving or sport. Our programs are designed to keep these students engaged and challenged with activities tailored to their strengths.

Our learning approach
Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.
Learning at our school is student-centred, inclusive and practical. We are committed to equity and access. We support all learning styles and needs. Our teachers use proven teaching strategies. They take part in ongoing professional development to stay up to date with best teaching practice.
Our learning approach includes:
- real-world learning: hands-on tasks, group work and exploring new ideas
- technology: to help students learn and build digital skills
- flexible teaching: the right support for each student, with a focus on wellbeing
- community connections: through excursions and local programs.
